SmartSearch® Announces its First Smart Practices Webinar for 2014: “Legal Marijuana? Implications for Human Resources & Employers”

Oceanside, California   February 15, 2014

Advanced Personnel Systems, Inc. (APS), the makers of SmartSearch®, announced the first webinar of 2014 in its smart practices series for recruiters, staffing, and human resources professionals will look at “Legal Marijuana? Implications for HR” on February 20.

Twenty states and the District of Columbia now have statutes that allow the use of medical marijuana, and recently Colorado and Washington have made marijuana legal for recreational use. At the same time, many private companies that are not federal contractors have adopted Drug-Free Workplace policies aimed at alcohol and drug use by employees/applicants.

In an informative, hour-long overview, attendees will learn the answers to some important questions about the implications of legal use of marijuana for employers, including: How to tell if your employees are under the influence of alcohol or marijuana; are employees who use legal medical marijuana subject to discipline for being under the influence? Are employers required by state Workers Compensation law to provide marijuana for employees who have medical marijuana cards? How do the new laws impact Drug Free Workplace policies?

The webinar is presented by Connye Harper, JD, SPHR and principal at Harper Strategies, LLC, a Human Resources and Organizational Development company. Ms. Harper has over 35 years of experience as a nationally recognized expert in labor and employment law. She has developed and implemented policies, practices, and programs that assist her clients in compliance with federal and state laws & regulations. She is a member of the American Bar Association and its Section on Labor and Employment Law.
