Los Angeles, CA – February 9th 2024 – Fig Trees, Highland Park’s first and only dispensary on Figueroa St., its main commercial corridor, is scheduled to open on Saturday, February 10th, 2024 at 10am.

Fig Trees is locally owned and operated by Daniel Sosa. Daniel is a Mount Washington native (Highland Park adjacent) and has resided there his whole life. “I love this area, obviously, I have remained here. Having the opportunity to open Figueroa’s first and only dispensary feels like a dream come true.”

Fig Trees, is Daniel’s third dispensary. He also owns and operates La Brea Collective in Mid City, which he opened almost 17 years ago in March 2007. And just this past September, Daniel opened Dr. Greenthumb’s West L.A., partnering with B-Real from the 1990s rap group Cypress Hill.

“LBC is certainly special because it endured many challenges and was my first, and Dr. Greenthumb’s is special, getting to work with music & cannabis icon Be Real. Fig Trees is special because this is my neighborhood where I grew up. I feel incredibly blessed to have such an amazing team who have helped me turn this dream into reality. It has been no small task.”

But it isn’t just Daniel and his team’s perseverance which makes Fig Trees’s opening so validating. The improbability of Fig Trees dates all the way back to 2004 when Daniel was arrested by LAPD on Mount Washington’s Kite Hill, and charged with felony marijuana sales. He was a college student at the time, and could have lost his financial aid – and his freedom – if convicted.

“Sitting in jail that night was humiliating, but everything happens for a reason. That arrest gave me motivation to work with other activists to change the government’s broken cannabis policies, and here we are today; opening a completely legal business in the same neighborhood – engaging in the same activity that got me arrested and charged with a felony 20 years ago.”
